Every Friday I’ll be sharing a photo from someplace in my travels.
This week’s photo is from Owakudani in Hakone, Japan.
Owakudani was like no where I had ever seen before, and simply for the colors alone. From the murky ice-blue water of the hot springs to the putrid yellow-green sulfur leaking from the earth, inside the active volcanic crater of Mount Kamiyama, Owakudani seemed otherworldly.
Before the area was called Owakudani, or Great Boiling Valley, it went by another name– O-jigoku, or Great Hell. If you ever get a chance to visit, you’ll quickly understand where the name comes from. The bubbling pools, the wafting sulfuric fumes, and the vents of steam, together all paint quite the hellish picture.
If you enjoyed this photo, please share it!
